Why add a watermark to your passport copy

A passport is the most powerful identity document you own. An unredacted copy gives a fraudster everything they need to impersonate you.

Prevent identity fraud

With your passport number, date of birth and photo, someone can open bank accounts, take out loans or travel in your name.

Watermark = unusable for misuse

A watermark like "COPY — for [recipient] — [date]" makes the copy worthless for any other purpose.

Cover the MRZ strip

The two coded lines at the bottom of your passport (MRZ) contain your full name, nationality, date of birth and document number in a machine-readable format.

GDPR-compliant sharing

Under the GDPR and similar laws, you should only share personal data that is strictly necessary. Redact what the recipient does not need.

How it works

1

Upload your passport

Choose a photo or scan of your passport. It is opened in your browser only — nothing is uploaded.

2

Cover & watermark

Drag black boxes over the document number and MRZ strip. Add a watermark with the purpose and date.

3

Download a safe PDF

The boxes and watermark are flattened into the image — the hidden data is gone for good.

Built for privacy

Your passport never leaves your device

The whole tool runs in your browser. We never receive, process or store your document.

Irreversible redaction

The pixels underneath the black boxes are destroyed — the data cannot be recovered, not even with PDF editing tools.

Works on any device

No app or install. Works in your phone or desktop browser, anywhere in the world.

Frequently asked questions

Is my passport uploaded to your servers?
No. The redaction, watermark and PDF are all created inside your browser. Your passport never reaches our servers, so there is nothing for us to store or leak.
What should I cover on my passport?
That depends on the recipient. Common choices are the document number and the MRZ strip (the two coded lines at the bottom). You decide what to cover.
What is the MRZ strip?
MRZ stands for Machine Readable Zone — the two lines of characters at the bottom of your passport. They contain your name, nationality, date of birth and document number in a format that machines and scanners can read directly.
Why add a watermark?
A watermark with the recipient and date makes the copy unusable for any other purpose. This limits the risk if the copy ends up in the wrong hands.
What file types can I use?
JPG and PNG photos or scans. HEIC photos from iPhone work in some browsers; if yours cannot open it, convert it to JPG first.
What does it cost?
Editing is free. Downloading the finished PDF uses 1 credit and requires an account.
