Frequently asked questions

What metadata does a PDF contain?
Typically title, author, subject, keywords, the creating software (producer), the PDF version and the creation and modification dates. XMP metadata is included too.
Is my PDF stored?
No. The file is only read to display the metadata and then deleted immediately. Nothing is stored.
Can I also remove the metadata?
Yes — our separate "remove metadata" tool wipes all metadata from a PDF. This page is only for viewing it.
Does this work with protected PDFs?
Metadata of a password-encrypted PDF can only be read once the file has been unlocked.
Is it really free?
Yes. Viewing metadata is completely free. For bulk processing and export to CSV/JSON there is the paid metadata extraction.
